India is targeting USD 10 billion in technical textile exports under its National Technical Textiles Mission (NTTM), as revealed by Minister of State for Textiles, Pabitra Margherita, in the Rajya Sabha. The mission, launched in 2020-21 and extended until 2025-26, has a financial outlay of Rs 1,480 crore.
At present, India’s technical textile exports range between USD 2 billion to USD 3 billion. Technical textiles refer to materials and products primarily used for their technical performance in various high-end industries, including agriculture, healthcare, construction, and more.
The NTTM has four key components:
- Research, Innovation, and Development: Rs 1,000 crore allocated for innovation, machinery development, and specialty fibres.
- Promotion and Market Development: Rs 50 crore for expanding markets.
- Export Promotion: Rs 10 crore for encouraging exports.
- Education, Training, and Skill Development: Rs 400 crore to create a skilled workforce.
This mission aims to boost innovation, enhance India’s exports, promote awareness, and develop indigenous machinery, solidifying India’s position as a global leader in technical textiles.
