Jordan Secures Full US Tariff Exemption for Textile and Apparel Exports Under New Reciprocal Trade Agreement
Amman, Jordan: Jordan has secured a major trade breakthrough with the United States after reaching a reciprocal trade agreement that grants full exemption from US customs duties on all Jordanian textile and apparel exports. The landmark deal is expected to significantly strengthen Jordan’s export competitiveness, attract new investment, and generate employment across the country’s textile manufacturing sector.
Jordan’s Minister of Industry, Trade and Supply, Yarub Qudah, described the agreement as a “historic qualitative leap” for the national economy, highlighting its importance in deepening the long-standing strategic and economic partnership between Jordan and the United States.
According to the minister, the agreement is the result of one year of intensive negotiations conducted within the framework of a reciprocal trade agreement signed in Washington last week. The new arrangement complements the Jordan–US Free Trade Agreement signed in 2001, which has served as the cornerstone of bilateral trade relations for more than two decades.
Textile Sector Receives Complete Tariff Exemption
A key feature of the agreement is the complete removal of US customs duties on all Jordanian clothing and textile exports, allowing products to enter the American market at zero tariffs. This provides Jordanian manufacturers with a significant competitive advantage, particularly as many exporting nations continue to face import duties in the US market.
The broader agreement also reduces reciprocal tariffs on other Jordanian products to 10 percent, a rate the Jordanian government considers highly competitive in comparison with many other exporting countries.
The apparel and textile industry, one of Jordan’s most important export sectors, is expected to be among the biggest beneficiaries. During the first four months of this year, Jordan’s apparel exports to the United States exceeded 431 million Jordanian dinars, underscoring the sector’s importance to the country’s economy.
Government officials believe exports could double in the coming years as the new tariff-free access encourages greater demand from US buyers and strengthens Jordan’s position in global apparel supply chains.
Boost for Investment and Employment
Minister Qudah said the new trade facilitations are expected to trigger a fresh wave of domestic and international investment in Jordan’s textile and apparel industry. The government anticipates that manufacturers will expand production capacity to capitalize on improved access to the US market.
The agreement is also expected to reinforce Jordan’s position as a regional export hub, encouraging multinational companies to establish or expand manufacturing operations within the Kingdom.
Beyond increasing exports, officials expect the initiative to create sustainable employment opportunities, support industrial growth, and enable Jordanian companies to expand their presence in international markets.
The Ministry of Industry, Trade and Supply stated that it will continue working closely with the private sector to convert the agreement’s commercial advantages into tangible investment projects and long-term economic growth.
Strengthening Bilateral Economic Relations
The latest agreement marks another milestone in the economic relationship between Jordan and the United States. By preserving duty-free access for textiles while reducing tariffs across other product categories, both countries aim to strengthen bilateral trade and promote greater economic cooperation.
Industry observers believe the agreement could further enhance Jordan’s attractiveness as a sourcing destination for international apparel brands seeking reliable, tariff-free access to the US market, while supporting the country’s broader export-led growth strategy.
