Uttar Pradesh (UP) is taking significant steps to become a global textile hub with major projects underway, aimed at boosting textile exports and creating employment opportunities. The Central government has set a goal of exporting textiles worth Rs 9 lakh crore by 2030, and UP is expected to play a crucial role in achieving this target due to its rich textile heritage and skilled workforce.
Key initiatives in the state include the One District One Product (ODOP) scheme, which promotes the unique textile crafts of districts like Kanpur, Varanasi, Mubarakpur, Bhadohi, and Mirzapur. Flatted factories have been established in districts like Gorakhpur to support textile production. Furthermore, Common Facility Centres (CFCs) are planned in Gautam Buddha Nagar, Lucknow, Mirzapur, and Bhadohi by 2025, under the ODOP scheme, offering consolidated facilities for local textile industries.
The state is also witnessing the development of mega textile parks under the PM MITRA Yojana, including a project along the Lucknow-Hardoi border. The government has made provisions for setting up textile and apparel parks, particularly within a 50 km radius of Jewar Airport in Gautam Buddha Nagar, and is focusing on developing the Purvanchal region as a hub for ready-made garments.
The Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA) and Gorakhpur Industrial Development Authority (GIDA) have launched major projects, including Apparel Parks and flatted factory units, to promote textile manufacturing and employment generation. The development of an Integrated Textile and Apparel Industrial Park in Agra and a flatted factory complex in the GIDA area further supports these efforts.
Additionally, the Central government has introduced a Cotton Mission with a budget allocation of Rs 500 crore to promote the cotton sector. The state is also expected to benefit from global opportunities, particularly in the textile sector, due to potential instability in Bangladesh, a major competitor in textile exports.
Uttar Pradesh is poised to leverage these initiatives to lead in industrial production, employment generation, and textile exports, making it a key player in India’s economic growth.
