New Delhi: Sutlej Textiles and Industries Limited, one of India’s leading textile manufacturers, has announced its strategic entry into the protective technical textiles (Protech) segment, marking a significant expansion beyond its traditional strengths in spinning, melange yarns, home textiles, and sustainable fibre solutions.
The move is part of the company’s long-term growth strategy to capitalize on the rising global demand for high-performance protective textiles used across industries such as oil & gas, manufacturing, utilities, mining, and infrastructure. Leveraging nearly nine decades of expertise in fibre and yarn technologies, Sutlej aims to establish itself as a leading supplier of advanced protective fabrics and integrated safety solutions.
Founded in 1934 by Dr. K.K. Birla as Sutlej Cotton Mills, the company has grown into a diversified textile enterprise with five manufacturing facilities across Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Jammu & Kashmir, exporting to more than 60 countries.
Leading the new business is Narinder Thapa, Chief Business Officer – Protech Business, who described the expansion as a natural progression for the company.
“The backbone of every textile product is yarn. We are among the pioneers in spinning and one of the largest yarn manufacturers in India. Our entry into technical textiles is therefore a natural extension of our existing strengths,” Thapa said.
Initial Focus on Protective Textiles
Rather than entering multiple technical textile categories simultaneously, Sutlej will initially focus exclusively on the Protech segment, developing fabrics designed to protect workers operating in hazardous industrial environments.
The company’s first product portfolio will include inherent flame-retardant fabrics, treated flame-resistant fabrics, and multifunctional protective workwear fabrics engineered to provide enhanced safety, durability, and wearer comfort.
Sutlej plans to utilize advanced performance fibres such as aramids, modacrylic, flame-resistant viscose, and polyamide while also developing innovative blends combining natural and engineered fibres.
Phased Growth Strategy
The company has adopted a phased roadmap for its technical textiles business. The initial phase will concentrate on manufacturing high-performance protective fabrics before gradually expanding into complete protective apparel solutions.
According to Thapa, this strategy allows the company to build expertise in material science and protective textile engineering while steadily moving up the value chain.
Innovation will remain central to the company’s approach, with an emphasis on developing products that address specific industrial hazards while improving comfort and functionality rather than replicating existing market offerings.
Reducing Dependence on Imported Fibres
A key challenge identified by Sutlej is India’s dependence on imported high-performance fibres, including aramids and other specialty materials widely used in protective clothing.
To address this, the company is evaluating opportunities for both backward and forward integration to strengthen domestic manufacturing capabilities and improve supply chain resilience.
This strategy builds on Sutlej’s experience in sustainable manufacturing through its Green Fibre facility in Baddi, which converts approximately 4.8 million post-consumer PET bottles daily into recycled polyester staple fibre for captive consumption.
Dual Focus on Export and Domestic Markets
Sutlej intends to target both international and domestic markets, with an initial emphasis on exports where demand for certified protective textiles is already well established.
At the same time, the company expects India’s protective clothing market to grow steadily as workplace safety regulations become more stringent and industrial awareness increases.
“We see opportunities in both export and domestic markets. Internationally, the demand is already mature, while India is steadily moving in the right direction with stronger regulations and increasing awareness regarding worker safety,” Thapa noted.

The company believes compliance with international safety standards will be one of its key competitive advantages. Protective textiles require strict adherence to global certifications covering flame resistance, thermal protection, electrical arc safety, and chemical resistance.
Rather than competing solely on price, Sutlej plans to position itself as a technology-driven solutions provider offering certified products tailored to industry-specific requirements across Europe, North America, Southeast Asia, and India.
Supported by certifications including ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001, SA8000, GOTS, and Oeko-Tex Standard 100, the company aims to combine innovation, quality, and regulatory compliance to strengthen its position in the global protective textiles market.
