PM Narendra Modi Inaugurates Arvind’s ₹150 Crore Garment Manufacturing Facility in Varanasi
New facility to generate over 1,000 jobs, strengthen India’s apparel manufacturing capacity and expand export opportunities in European and UK markets.
Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated a new garment manufacturing facility of Arvind Limited in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, marking a major investment in India’s textile and apparel manufacturing sector. The inauguration was attended by Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, senior government officials and industry leaders.
Developed with an investment of approximately ₹150 crore, the greenfield facility is Arvind Limited’s first manufacturing unit in Uttar Pradesh. Spread across 5.5 acres, the plant has a built-up area of approximately 65,000 square feet and an estimated revenue potential of ₹250 crore.
The facility is expected to create employment opportunities for more than 1,000 people, predominantly women, while strengthening the region’s garment manufacturing ecosystem.
Advanced Manufacturing and Employment Generation
The new plant will manufacture essential knitwear products using advanced automated sewing technologies and modern production systems. The facility has been designed to improve productivity, maintain consistent product quality and support large-scale manufacturing operations.
Arvind has also established dedicated worker hostels to support employees, with plans to expand residential infrastructure as production operations grow.
Beyond direct employment, the project is expected to generate additional economic activity through local sourcing, logistics, supply chains and supporting services. It could also encourage skill development and create new opportunities for local communities.
Strengthening Arvind’s Textile Value Chain
The Varanasi facility represents a strategic step towards vertical integration for Arvind Limited. By expanding its garmenting operations, the company will be able to convert its in-house knitted fabric into finished apparel, strengthening its integrated manufacturing capabilities.
This approach is expected to improve coordination between fabric production and garment manufacturing, enhance customer relationships and help the company offer a broader range of products to existing and new buyers.
The investment also comes at a time when global apparel brands are looking to diversify their sourcing bases. India’s established textile industry, skilled workforce and expanding manufacturing infrastructure provide opportunities for domestic companies to strengthen their position in international markets.
Focus on Global Markets and Export Growth
The facility is expected to support Arvind’s efforts to expand its presence in overseas markets, particularly Europe and the United Kingdom. Improved garment manufacturing capacity could help the company offer more integrated sourcing solutions to international customers.
With India pursuing new free trade agreements and seeking to strengthen its international trade relationships, additional garmenting capacity may help manufacturers prepare for emerging export opportunities. The extent of the benefits will depend on the applicable trade agreements, market access conditions and customer demand.
Industry Leadership Highlights India’s Manufacturing Potential
Speaking at the inauguration, Sanjay Lalbhai, Chairman of Arvind Limited, expressed the company’s appreciation for the Prime Minister’s presence and highlighted the Lalbhai Group’s longstanding contribution to India’s industrial development.
He noted that the group’s journey began in 1897 and emphasised its commitment to investment, employment generation and nation-building. He also highlighted the importance of women’s participation in the workforce and the role of industrial investment in supporting India’s economic growth.
Punit Lalbhai, Vice Chairman of Arvind Limited, highlighted India’s growing potential as a global apparel manufacturing destination. He emphasised that investments in manufacturing capacity, productivity, sustainability and workforce development would be essential to capitalising on international demand and diversified sourcing opportunities.
Kulin Lalbhai, Vice Chairman of the company, pointed to Uttar Pradesh’s infrastructure development, connectivity, industrial expansion and skill-building initiatives as factors supporting its emergence as an attractive manufacturing destination.
Uttar Pradesh Strengthens Its Textile and Apparel Industry
The new facility adds garment manufacturing capacity in Uttar Pradesh and reinforces Varanasi’s potential to attract industrial investment and employment. The project is expected to support the local economy through direct and indirect job creation, workforce training and business opportunities for ancillary industries.
For India’s textile sector, investments of this kind highlight the growing importance of integrating fabric manufacturing with finished garment production. Such integration can help companies improve operational efficiency, respond more quickly to customer requirements and develop stronger offerings for domestic and international buyers.
As global apparel sourcing continues to evolve, Arvind’s Varanasi facility represents a significant addition to India’s manufacturing infrastructure, with the potential to support employment, strengthen the textile value chain and contribute to the country’s ambitions for greater participation in global apparel trade.
